During this special Guild Year in Preston, CAFOD and Christian Aid have joined together to do a sponsored walk on Saturday 5th May 2012.
Not only do we hope to raise funds and awareness of the work of our two development agencies, but we aim to highlight to our City our shared vision for a world without poverty and injustice.
There’s a choice of a 5 or 10 mile walk taking in some of the Guild Wheel route, starting at Avenham Park in Preston.
A route which is mobility scooter / wheelchair / pushchair friendly is also available – please ask. We’d like to make this opportunity accessible to everyone.
Walkers can do this either for CAFOD or Christian Aid.
We’re also looking for volunteers to help us on the day – only for a couple of hours or so. If you can’t manage the walk but would like to actively support us in this way, do get in touch.
CAFOD will be focusing their fundraising on the issue of water, continuing the theme running through Lent. Monies raised for CAFOD will qualify for match funding by the UK government. So this year, £33 could provide not just one, but two families with clean water through a water filter system. This is what CAFOD will be focussing its fundraising on for this walk. There’s so much we need to do. One in eight people in the world still don’t have access to clean water. Every twenty seconds a child dies because of dirty water.
With your support, we can provide clean water for thousands more people like 30-year-old Ketai from Zimbabwe. “Water is always on my mind – fetching it, using it, worrying about where to get it. It’s how I spend most hours of the day,” she says. Today, thanks to you, we have drilled a well that provides clean water near Ketai’s home.
We invite you to join us on as we walk together for the Guild in solidarity with those overseas who struggle on a day to day basis.
