Pedal power success for Callum

Congratulations to Callum Cherry from Preston, aged 10, and his dad Adrian, who completed their mammoth cycle ride for CAFOD this weekend: 45 miles in just under 4 hours!!

Adrian, tells us about the day……

When we drove up from Preston there was plenty of sunshine, but as we approached Ribblehead the skies darkened and the snow flurries began so it wasn’t an auspicious start. Callum started with about 5 layers of clothes on, and he soon had to stop to put my waterproof gloves on as he was getting that cold. However it soon cleared before we got to Settle although it was still fairly cold Callum had warmed up with the cycling and removed his fleece for the run across country to Wigglesworth. We headed over through Sawley as we’d planned a lunch stop at the Kitchen Cafe in Waddington, near Clitheroe.

A quick hot chocolate and ham toastie provided a little sustenance to keep him going. I was taking a couple of photos outside the cafe when the owner came out and offered to take a couple of photographs so that we could both be in the shot, when he found out what Callum was doing he added a couple of pounds to fund raising. Callum did say to me at that point he was amazed how generous people were for what was just a little bike ride, although he hadn’t finished yet so didn’t quite know what lay ahead!

After Waddington we had to skirt around Longridge Fell which had a few steady climbs to test his tired legs, but he made it and we could then roll down into Preston. So I’m very proud of his achievement because he managed the 45miles in just under 4hrs cycling time at an average speed of 11.5mph.

So far Callum has managed to raise just over £300 in sponsorship for the ride, some of which will be boosted by Gift Aid and also with the Government matching funds he should have raised over £600. He is very pleased to have exceeded a target he set himself. His Dad is very proud of him as well!

CAFOD is really impressed, Callum – we admire the generosity of your spirit and your determination to see this through – and in such an impressive time too!!  Thank you so much.  This amount of funding will make a real difference to the lives of many.  Clean drinking water leads to healthier, safer living – that’s priceless.
