Loaves & Fishes Celebration all around Morecambe Bay
7-15 June 2014
As people of Christian faith, we wish to celebrate the wonders of Morecambe Bay, encouraging every coastal community and school between Barrow-in-Furness and Fleetwood to host a ‘Loaves & Fishes’ meal open to people of all faiths or none, sharing fish, seafood and bread in a shore-side picnic, school meal or parish party.
This will be an opportunity for welcoming those who know little about the wildlife and culinary delights of the sea and shore, who hesitate to cook and eat together or who cannot afford a decently cooked meal.
Will you join us in embracing local communities and our fellow creatures in the sea, against the beautiful backdrop of the Bay?
To be part of this event, you can organise your own celebration any time between Saturday 7 and Sunday 15 June, 2014, the week of Whitsuntide/Pentecost. For many communities, this is a traditional time for celebration – and there is a good chance of finer weather for outdoor meals and coastal walks.
In your family, your neighbourhood or parish … you can organise and host a community meal yourselves, celebrating the glories of Creation, healthy eating and environmental sustainability. We can help with finding sources of fish, seafood and bread, with simple recipes to follow, with details of others who wish to share a meal.
If you are a school … you can learn about the wildlife of Morecambe Bay through the curriculum, how to protect it, how to harvest the seas sustainably, how to celebrate their wonders in meals with your family and friends. We can help with ideas about the curriculum, community events and wildlife walks and talks.
If you are a local business … a fish & seafood enterprise, fishmonger or baker, you can use this project as an opportunity to promote your wares as wholesome, affordable, sustainable food. If you are a local restaurant or café, why not promote a themed menu for this week, showcasing fish and seafood, even some recipes especially for the occasion?
If you wish to celebrate the glories of Creation in your worship … we can guide you to blessings, readings, prayers, hymns, images and music which you can use when your community gathers, formally or informally for worship, meditation or other times of peace and recollection. This will be an opportunity to say together ‘Bless you the Lord, all you works of the Lord …’
